What is the SCA?

Founded in 1966, the Society for Creative Anachronism is an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating pre-17th-century European society. We don't try to recreate specific historical events, such as the battle of Agincourt. Instead, we try to recreate the arts, sciences and way of life of the Middle Ages. If you'd like to know more, please read about the Society.

How do I join?

Easy! Show up at a practice or an event. If you enjoy the experience, then keep showing up. You can also become a paid member of the SCA by sending the appropriate form with the appropriate fee ($35.00 USD for Canadian residents) to the appropriate address. Paid membership includes a monthly kingdom newsletter. You'll find more details as well as contact information on the Join Us page.

What do I wear?

Not a trivial question. Although everyone is encouraged to wear medieval clothes (referred to as garb in the SCA) to practice, it's OK to wear street clothes, especially if it's your first time. If you plan on attending an event however, a "reasonable attempt at pre-17th century clothing" is mandatory. Basically, there are no spectators at events; everyone contributes to creating a medieval atmosphere by at least being dressed in a medieval fashion.

Don't worry too much about it if you're just starting out. You will certainly find people happy to help you out and perhaps even lend you something appropriate for your first event. Loaner garb is also often available at events. If you'd like to know more about this broad subject, come to a practice and ask around.
